Let cushions do the ground work for you

The concept of the ‘outdoor room’ planted itself in Australian backyards over the past few summers with the room designed in such a way to ensure these spaces can also now be enjoyed in winter. It has taken off faster than the “open living” concept that became the norm several years ago in our interiors. Australians have embraced this concept and opened their back doors to patios, pools and pergolas, creating defined outdoor spaces in which to amuse, feast and unwind. As the “outdoor room” concept continues in our gardens, manufacturers and retailers of furniture are developing more slick and resilient products that enhance the comfort and convenience of backyard entertaining. The result is outdoor living spaces similar in design and construction to those indoors. Needless to say, furniture plays a large role in creating outdoor rooms and the modern furnishings now available are ideal as they tend to not divert from the true focal point, your garden. Chaise lounges or tables and chairs with simple lines can give your backyard a relaxed feel, creating a home retreat area, where one can release and recharge after a busy weeks work. Winter is no excuse with ideas such as outdoor fireplaces or enclosed alfresco areas becoming more of a demand on the home renovator’s wish list. Why not throw some floor cushions around the fire and lounge around the floor now that winter is approaching. Cushioning to outdoor chairs adds to the “organic” look we are all trying to achieve taking that hard edge off our slick furniture and making it blend more to our landscape. Large cushions are also ideal to add additional seating and can be thrown on decks or floors, doubling up as additional seating or simply a space where one can chat to friends! Ritossa Furnishers specialise in custom made furniture and have a range of cushions to choose from; or design them yourself. Lighting in an outdoor room can be a feature and gives the space “mood” and ambience, creating a very different feel on those late nights in our yards. One thing to remember when creating your ideal “outdoor room” is that there are no “rules”. So feel free to mix colour, throw cushions on the floor or hang lanterns in your trees. The backyard should be not only relaxing; but a space where one feels liberated and can be “at Home.” Now your backyard can be a place of comfort as well as an area to entertain.

Adding Shelving

If you’re lucky enough to own a large collection of books, go ahead and enjoy the look of them in your house with wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling shelving. But before installing shelves, there are a few practical considerations. Given the overall weight a large storage unit will carry, it is important to ensure the structure is solid and is securely fastened, to prevent tipping over. Beware the cheap pre-fab; many are simply not up to the task of safely holding a wall full of books. Make sure the unit is strong if buying off the shop floor.

This weekend while in the backstreets of Sydney; I found myself looking at laser cut timber letters, some old tram station stop signs and an old optical test chart from the 60’s. All letters, words and beautiful fonts; all art. I think we often forget that Typography makes beautiful art in a home. Art is personal and it does not need to be expensive. Put writing on the wall or use numbers, letters and words to create a graphic scheme for a home. Typography is the practice of arranging letters and words to make them more readable, or visually interesting. On the web, typography has long been hindered by the technology. However, times are changing and the future is looking bright for the art of typography. Australian artist Vince Frost, of Frost design has built an extremely successful career from the admiration and supremacy of the use of Typography and creating it as art. Frost uses letters and words to create an impressive effect as decoration, especially when displayed as a defined arrangement rather than a group of accidental shapes. People love achieving a look that feels old but still stylish and is individual yet complimentary. Stick to a range of colours such as black and white with one word in red or hot pink and make a statement in your home. Hang, stand, lean or suspend in Perspex your favourite typesetting pieces. Let them feel relaxed and natural on your wall or preferred buffet. Ensure that you choose a size that will suit your particular space. If it is too large it will overwhelm and if too small will be lost and look out of proportion. It’s a new age of art, it’s the computer generation of typesetting and printing, and there’s an emerging nostalgia and appreciation for letterpress and its unique visual impact and handmade qualities. Hang an old tram sign in your study or some timber letters in your daughters room and let typography be ‘translated” in your space! Laser cut letters can be purchased from Flourish Gift & Home from as little as $25.

Recent Work
This home located near the beach consists of warm timbers and stunning gold details with a balance of clean white surfaces as the base. This home has it all, an inviting feel with glamorous that is livable.
The brief given to the Stile Interiors design team was a house that would be practical for young children yet also something that would be suitable for the many years to come. The palette of rich colours with the balance of the warm whites created a space that was inviting yet open.
The fit our at Cosmetic Laser and Dental is a fresh and clean with the play on the timber, splashes of citrus green and crisp white surfaces.
This home located towards the Adelaide Hills follows the idea of form and function; with value to the way something appeared and also the way it worked. Every part of the design process was thoroughly thought out from the material board to the fine hardware chosen. From initial meetings to final furniture selections; nothing was chosen which compromised the integrity of the initial brief and the final finish. This home, taking advantage of the amazing view; has satisfied the clients initial brief of designing a place of retreat and relaxation.
From the initial meetings with our team at Stile Interiors the clients desired a home of character, from the plan out of the house to the palette of materials chosen. With rich finishes such as cashmere granite tops in the kitchen to a timber staircase the home was completely opposite to a white box. Every area such as the kitchen and the wet areas were complimentary to each other, creating an invisible flow through the house
This beautiful home, located in Grange, shows the perfect combination of natural materials, tones and textures. The open plan kitchen and living area is ideal for entertaining, and is filled with stylish (yet practical) furniture. The luxury of open plan living has been further enhanced through the flexibility of large bi-fold doors, allowing inside-outside living. A beautiful stone wall creates a strong feature outside and is continued inside, further enhancing the comfort of inside-outside living. Beautiful polished concrete floors create a perfect backdrop for the use of natural materials such as stone, timber, and leather. Textures throughout this space bring detail through fabrics, elegant pendant lights, and wallpaper. The master bedroom is a luxurious escape, rich in texture and tone. The kitchen is clean and simple, incorporating a subtle colour palette and contemporary materials. Ornate detail has been created through the subtle metallic mosaic splashback. This space is shows beautiful combination of contemporary style!
Chic and stunning, this residence consists of a simple white palette with warmth injected through timber flooring, natural stone and furniture. The dark tiled feature wall in the living area is a focal point in the house with large picture windows overlooking the lap pool and gorgeous natural stone wall which feels as though it is part of the interior living space. The chocolate floor tiles in the bathrooms create a warm space together with the stone mosaic splashback
This home along the esplanade at Henley Beach captures a home of luxury living. The client’s initial brief was to step out of the boundary in terms of products and the way they were are regularly used. Upon entrance to the home you get a glance of the entertaining area before entering the interiors of the house. Fun elements were introduced such as the pressed metal along the staircase wall and the marble strip flooring to mimic the form of timber. All areas of the home was considered and thought out, with no compromise to the initial brief of the home. All materials were carefully picked and researched to ensure the best product was used. Final elements were also carefully considered such as feature lighting and window treatments.
Practical living near the beach The brief given to Stile Interiors for this Grange home, located within minutes of the beach, was to create a home ideal for practical living. The timber floors and white walls create the base for a practical way of living with the option to keep the kitchen light, allowing the open entertaining area to appear large and undisturbed. The finishes in the remainder of the house continue the warmth by having dark porcelain floors in the bathroom and wool carpet in the bedrooms. Final touches such as chocolate sheer curtains and dark furnishings finish the interior of the house set for living.
The brief given to Stile Interiors for this particular job was to create an exterior space that complemented the interior of the home, yet still creating a separate entertaining area of its own. Through every process Stile Interiors were able to offer the clients conceptual designs, sketches and samples of every finish; from the large rectified tile to the mosaics in the pool. The end result was an outdoor space for the family to enjoy in every season.
