Relaxation massage is the style that comes to mind when most people think about massage and is the most common and best-known form of bodywork performed today.
The aim is relaxing the entire body & this is accomplished by massaging the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Additional techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending and stretching. Oil or balms are used to reduce friction and stimulate the skin.
Relaxation Massage is exceptional for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility whilst easing stress and tension.

Sport (deep tissue) massage is used to ease knots and release chronic muscle tension. Other benefits include reducing inflammation and helping to eliminate scar tissue. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).
Sport (deep tissue) massage uses strokes across the grain of the muscles, not with the grain as in Relaxation massage. More intense movements and techniques such as deep finger pressure may be utilised.
Sport (deep tissue) massage helps athletes maintain a consistent, injury-free training program and improve athletic recovery time. It is also used to ease chronic neck and back tension.

A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. A trigger point in the back, for example, may cause pain in the muscles of the neck. The muscles of the neck, now acting as satellite trigger points, may then cause pain in the head. The pain may be sharp and intense or a dull ache. Trigger points are caused by muscle overuse or injury, and because the aches are associated with moving parts, the pain is commonly mistaken for arthritis.
Trigger point massage is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. In this type of massage the recipient actively participates through deep breathing as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort.
The result of trigger point therapy is the elimination of toxins in the muscles and the release of energising endorphins. A significant decrease in pain is often found after just one treatment.

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle,non-invasive form of manual therapy that deals with the movement of the Cerebral spinal fluid surrounding the skull and spine. Craniosacral therapists ease the restrictions on nerve passages by focusing on the membranes and tissue that encase the central nervous system and spinal cord.
Craniosacral therapy seeks to restore misaligned cranial bones to their proper position. It is thought to eliminate the negative effects of birth trauma, as well as provide relief from migraine headaches, neck and back pain, temporomandibular joint disorder (the inflammation of the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull) and more.
This advanced therapy has been featured on ABC television and is widely gaining fame for helping with many neurological conditions.

Reflexology is an ancient holistic therapy that has been practised for thousands of years. It involves the application of pressure to specific reflexes/points on the feet. It is believed these reflexes correspond to areas and organs of the body. When pressure is applied, tensions are eased, resulting in a deep body/mind relaxation while stimulating circulation, elimination and encouraging the body to heal itself at it's own pace. The therapy can bring relief to a wide range of chronic and acute conditions and is an excellent way of preventing illness by strengthening the immune system and for general health and wellbeing. People of all ages and walks of life can benefit from the positive effects of reflexology and are using this safe and natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonising the body

Pregnancy brings with it a variety of side effects, some less pleasant than others. All pregnant women can expect to experience at least a little stiffness and muscular tension during their pregnancy as their uterus expands to accommodate their growing baby. Fortunately there is a simple and effective way to not only treat some of the side effects of pregnancy, but also leave you feeling great. Massage therapy during pregnancy can often relieve many of the common side effects of pregnancy, whether you suffer from back aches, headaches, oedema or other pregnancy-related problems. Back pain can continue throughout pregnancy and even after. If you have to carry around other small children you may find your symptoms exacerbated during pregnancy.
Prenatal massage is increasingly gaining popularity as pregnant women begin recognising the benefits prenatal massage has to offer women during pregnancy. At Natural Therapies, we specialise in Prenatal and Postnatal Massage.
